ELKTON, Va. (AP) - Police say an East Rockingham High School soccer player has been killed in a car crash, hours before he was to play in a game.
The Daily News-Record reports (https://bit.ly/1ccXIHv) that 16-year-old junior Ethan Zander was killed Friday afternoon near Elkton. The school’s athletic director Eric Philips says a 17-year-old teammate, Jeffrey Roach, was with Zander and has been hospitalized. An update on Roach’s condition hasn’t been released.
Police say the car carrying the teens crossed over the centerline and was hit by a tractor-trailer. The truck driver wasn’t charged.
Zander was a goalkeeper and one of the team’s captains. Zander and Roach were due to attend their team’s first-round conference tournament match at Robert E. Lee High School in Staunton. The game was called off.
