CLEVELAND (AP) - As the summer boating season gets underway, the U.S. Coast Guard is reminding Lake Erie boaters that they are subject to involuntary boarding by personnel to check for proper safety equipment.

The Coast Guard says that applies to any vessel, including kayaks, canoes, and personal watercraft.

Boardings typically take less than 30 minutes, with Coast Guard personnel checking for such equipment as life jackets, flares and fire extinguishers.

Operators should be prepared to present the vessel’s original registration paperwork and government-issued identification.
