WELCH, W.Va. (AP) - Local businesses are offering their equipment and workforce to McDowell County to help demolish abandoned buildings.
WVVA-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1Hqq5L2 ) the Solid Waste Authority has partnered with the McDowell County Commission to work on the demolition projects. Since January, 17 structures have been taken down in the southwestern county.
Southern Minerals owner Eddie Asbury says his company is donating excavators, bulldozers and loaders to help.
State Sen. Bill Cole, R-Mercer County, says he is glad to see local business owners contribute to the effort since there is not a lot of government money available to fund the demolitions.
Property owners of the abandoned buildings sign their structure over to the county. Once the building is removed, the county delivers the land back to the property owner.
