SHERIDAN, Wyo. (AP) - Two Sheridan County residents have pleaded not guilty to charges of felony child abuse against three children.

The Sheridan Press reports (https://bit.ly/1AhKvsJ ) that the case is uncommon because authorities say the abuse was primarily emotional and mental rather than physical abuse.

Michael A. Tibbets and Donna Gifford have both been charged with one felony count of felony child abuse. The crime is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine.

In March, both Tibbets and Gifford pleaded not guilty. Later in March, Gifford entered a not guilty plea for reason of mental illness or deficiency. An evaluation has been ordered of Gifford.

Pre-trial conferences for Gifford and Tibbets have been set for July 28 and trials for Aug. 31.
