GILLETTE, Wyo. (AP) - A record-breaking firework display was set to go off in August at Gillette’s Cam-Plex, but the plans have fizzled.
The Gillette News Record reports (https://bit.ly/1JNQcke ) that the event was scheduled for the Pyrotechnics Guild International conference, but PGI cancelled the show because of technical issues.
The plan was to launch a firework of at least 28 inches in diameter, beating out the current state record-holder of a 24-inch diameter explosive that resulted in a flower about a half-mile wide.
Cam-Plex General Manager Paul Foster says the idea came from a former Cam-Plex employee, not the pyrotechnics themselves.
PGI members say they have tried similar launches before without success. With a firework of that size, the distance between the crowd and the explosion is so great that it overrides any effect.
