BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Senator Bernie Sanders returns to the Lake Champlain waterfront - where he led rebuilding efforts as mayor of Burlington - to kick off his campaign for president.
Sanders announced last month he was running for president, but saved his formal campaign launch for Tuesday in Burlington’s Waterfront Park.
The park was a centerpiece of the urban redevelopment projects Sanders led as mayor in the 1980s, after a plan to line the shore with expensive condominiums was dropped.
Now an independent U.S. Senator from Vermont, the 73-year-old Sanders is considered a long shot as he challenges former Senator and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination.
Sanders said he was a long shot when he first won the Burlington mayor’s office in 1981. His advice: “Don’t underestimate me.”
