PORTSMOUTH, Va. (AP) - The Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and Portsmouth officials are at odds over the city’s dwindling funding for the organization.
Hall of Fame President Eddie Webb says the city hasn’t honored a commitment to provide $500,000 annually.
Webb tells The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1Er7Hj8 ) that the organization must cut activities and services beginning July 1, in large part because of reductions in city subsidies. He says the Hall of Fame might have to close.
Mayor Kenny Wright says city officials have told the private organization for years that it needs to carry its own weight. He says the organization needs to develop revenue from other parts of the state.
Both Wright and Webb say they’re willing to discuss turning over ownership of the Hall of Fame to the city.
