BODEGA BAY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a scuba diver who died in the water off the Sonoma County coast was a California Highway Patrol lieutenant and ex-Marine.

The CHP said in a statement Monday that the diver was 54-year-old Jeffrey Alan Rhea, a 27-year veteran officer who enlisted in the Marines in 1980 and served in the reserves until 2011. He’s survived by two adult daughters.

The Santa Rosa Press-Democrat reported (https://bit.ly/1F4EB9T ) Rhea was diving for abalone Sunday with two others in Salt Point State Park when he began struggling in the water.

Lifeguards and a sheriff’s paramedic tried to revive Rhea, but he was pronounced dead at a bluff near the water and the coroner is investigating the cause.

His was the fifth death of the abalone diving season, which began last month.
