AKRON, Ohio (AP) - An energy company that has been in Akron for nearly 100 years has signed a lease to stay there until at least 2025.

FirstEnergy Corp. says it signed an 8 ½-year lease extension Thursday with McKinley Inc., which owns the 19-story downtown Akron building that houses 900 of the company’s employees.

The new lease will run until June 2025. The terms of the agreement weren’t disclosed.

The company had considered moving its headquarters before its current lease was set to expire in 2016.

FirstEnergy currently employs 16,000 people in six states, with 2,800 working in the Akron area.

FirstEnergy CEO Charles Jones says the company looks forward to being a major presence in downtown Akron.
