LAFAYETTE, La. (AP) - Jeanerette’s police chief has been placed on paid leave following his arrest on charges relating to the investigation of a Lafayette topless bar.

Marvin Grogan was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center Friday on one count of malfeasance in office and three counts of compounding a felony. He was released after posting $12,500 bond.

It’s unclear exactly why police charged Grogan. Metro Narcotics Capt. Dwayne Prejean, who announced the arrest in a news release, did not release any details about the allegations against Grogan.

Jeanerette Mayor Aprill Foulcard said in a statement that she and the city attorney met with Grogan and placed him on leave. Foulcard said Gloria Lombard will be the interim police chief for the 5,500-resident Iberia Parish city.

“To say the city is shocked to learn of these charges is an understatement, but I want our citizens to know we will cooperate in any manner necessary with the investigation,” Foulcard said.

Grogan’s arrest is the 14th stemming from an eight-month investigation into Lipsticks Gentlemen’s Club by Lafayette Metro Narcotics Task Force agents after they received a tip that an underage runaway was working at the club and may have been involved in prostitution through the club and online ads on Backpage.com.

Agents with the state Office of Alcohol and Tobacco Control in a May 14 raid issued citations for 18 counts of lewd acts on the premises, four counts of prostitution on the premises, three counts of controlled substances on the premises and one count of failure to keep the premises clean and sanitary.

Among those arrested were the club’s owner, Mohammed Ali Makki, on 10 counts of obscenity and one count of keeping a disorderly place. The Lafayette Fire Department also issued the owner five parish fire code violations and one state fire code violation.

The juvenile was returned to her family.
