CAMPOBELLO, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a man in the back seat who shot the front seat passenger of a car while it was on Interstate 26 has been charged with attempted murder.

Campobello Police Chief William McNeil told media outlets that 22-year-old Oshea Stoudemire ran from the car after it stopped following the shooting around 10:30 p.m. Sunday. He was arrested Monday morning.

McNeil says Stoudemire and others in the car said the shooting was an accident, but the investigation indicates otherwise.

The chief says the man shot is in critical condition at a Spartanburg hospital.

The shooting happened while the car was traveling between mile markers 3 and 5 on I-26. No one else was injured.

Stoudemire remains in jail. It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
