GILCHRIST, Ore. (AP) - The Oregon State Police are investigating a weekend accident near Gilchrist in which a pedestrian standing in the middle of Highway 97 was struck by two vehicles.

Sgt. David MacKenzie says the accident before 5 a.m. Sunday left 60-year-old Miles Douglas Mattox of Gilchrist dead. A passenger in one vehicle, 56-year-old Robert Saunders, was taken to a local hospital, where he was treated for minor injuries and released.

MacKenzie says the road was shrouded in heavy fog at the time of the accident. Highway 97 was closed for about three hours for the investigation.
