BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - A 2-alarm fire has destroyed an apartment building in Birmingham and left several people displaced.

Multiple news outlets report the blaze broke Monday afternoon at Chalet Apartments. One person was taken to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries have been reported.

The three-story building is on a steep hill, which complicated firefighters’ efforts to get the blaze under control.

Fire and police officials remained at the scene for several hours after extinguishing the fire to check for hot spots and conduct follow-up searches.

Investigators say they are looking into the cause of the blaze.

The apartment building includes 21 one- and two-bedroom units. It is unclear how many units were damaged.

Witnesses say the flames were visible for miles.
