LURAY, Va. (AP) - A man and wife were killed in a crash with a state trooper who was pursuing a speeding vehicle in Page County, authorities said.

VSP Sgt. F.L. Tyler identified them as Thomas “Tom” Ramey, 64, and his wife and passenger, Barbara, 64. Tyler said the couple, both of Luray, died at the scene of the Monday accident. The trooper, 25-year-old M.R. Leeds, was injured in the crash, authorities said.

Tom Ramey was a veteran weather watcher for WHSV-TV. The station (https://bit.ly/1HICRdA ) is paying tribute to Ramey, who for 20 years, called the studio daily updating meteorologists on the weather-happenings in Luray.

Meteorologist Jay Webb writes on the station’s website that “anyone who ever met Tom knew he was a character. His quick wit and personality made him a fast friend to all the meteorologists who worked with him. Not a day went by he didn’t tell us a joke.”

Tyler told The Daily News-Record (https://bit.ly/1SzFtgS) Leeds was driving west on U.S. 211 near Luray when a speeding vehicle passed him. Tyler said Leeds turned on his lights and siren and made a U-turn before chasing the vehicle.

As the trooper pursued it, Ramey’s 1965 Buick pulled out from a side street to cross the highway and the two vehicles collided.

Leeds was taken to Page Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation.
