MATTAPOISETT, Mass. (AP) - Two people, including a high school senior days from graduation, have been killed in a car crash in Mattapoisett.

Police said 21-year-old Brooklyn Cody Rodrigues of Fairhaven was driving the car that went off the road and struck a tree at the intersection of Route 6 and Mattapoisett Neck Road late Monday night.

The passenger, 18-year-old Meghan Sargent, a senior at Fairhaven High School, also was killed.

School Superintendent Robert Baldwin said Tuesday Sargent was drum major for the school’s band and had participated in a Memorial Day parade. Rodrigues was a former student at the school.

Police Chief Mary Lyons told the Standard-Times of New Bedford that there were no signs drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash, but the car likely was going over the speed limit.
