CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) - Apex Tool Group says it’s closing its plant in upstate New York by the end of the year.

Apex says the work being done in Cortland will be shifted to newer plants in York, Pennsylvania, and Sumter, South Carolina.

The company also says the Cortland plant’s 89 employees will be laid off but can apply for any open jobs at the facilities in Pennsylvania and South Carolina. The layoffs will be done in phases beginning Aug. 17.

Kelly Blask, a spokeswoman for the company, tells The Post-Standard of Syracuse (https://bit.ly/1Q6y058 ) the Cortland facility has been operating below capacity for some time.

The factory makes wire rope, chain fittings and overhead lifting devices. It has operated in the same building in Cortland since 1911.

Cortland is 30 miles south of Syracuse.
