BRYANT, Ark. (AP) - Authorities say a sound that has alarmed a number of Arkansans is simply the song of the cicada.

Lt. Jeffrey Silk of the Saline County Sheriff’s Office told KTHV-TV (https://bit.ly/1cXCqyp ) on Monday that dispatchers have been flooded with 911 calls by people who mistook the sound for sirens, UFOs or other ominous events.

Silk says deputies were dispatched after a rash of calls came in Saturday morning and that their investigation determined the small bugs to be the source of public angst.

Male cicadas make the noise to attract mates and it can be heard up to a mile away.

Silk says the office appreciates citizens reporting suspicious activity but that the cicadas “are just insects doing what insects do.”
