OROVILLE, California (AP) - Authorities say a man drowned at a California wildlife area while trying to cross a pond carrying a rock.

The Sacramento Bee reports Tuesday (https://bit.ly/1HJPDIA ) that 21-year-old Austin Harr was attempting to swim across a pond at the Oroville Wildlife Area Monday while holding a rock estimated to weigh about 10 pounds.

Monday was Harr’s 21st birthday.

His friends called for help when he did not emerge from the water.

It’s unclear why Harr was swimming with a rock, although California Highway Patrol says alcohol may have played a role.
