QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (AP) - Two dogs are dead after an off-duty officer with the Arizona Department of Public Safety says he shot them when they wandered into his backyard in Queen Creek and exhibited aggressive behavior.

KPHO-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1esgFYG) Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Joaquin Enriquez says the unidentified officer told investigators he was frightened for his children. He said he fired at the animals late Monday morning when they refused to leave his yard and attacked him.

Enriquez says neighbors were contacted and reported the dogs had been aggressive in the past.

MCSO says charges are unlikely.
