SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) - A Springfield man has died after he crashed into a pole while trying to escape from police.

The Eugene Register-Guard reports (https://bit.ly/1LFLwvM ) 30-year-old Anthony Alexander was pronounced dead at the scene Monday.

The incident began when an officer tried to stop Alexander for an unspecified traffic violation. Alexander sped away from police in a 1996 Honda Accord.

Police say an officer pursued the vehicle, but stopped because Alexander had reached speeds estimated to exceed 100 mph.

Police Sgt. Keith Seanor says the crash caused an explosion when the utility pole’s transformer blew out. A power line dangled over Alexander’s car, and rescuers were unable to reach him until power could be temporarily cut off.

Eugene Springfield Fire Department personnel had to remove the car’s roof to get to Alexander.
