GOLDSBORO, N.C. (AP) - Former North Carolina legislator John H. Kerr III of Goldsboro has died. He was 79.

Sandra Kerr said her husband died Sunday. A Democrat, Kerr was first elected to the state House in 1986. He held the seat for three terms before election to the Senate, where he served until retiring in 2008.

During his years at the legislature, Kerr used his position as co-chairman of the Senate Finance Committee to fight for road and infrastructure projects in Eastern North Carolina. He was an ally of former Senate President Pro Tempore Marc Basnight, the Dare County Democrat then widely considered to be the most powerful man in state government.

Kerr was also a lawyer in private practice in Goldsboro. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons.
