BROWNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man has pleaded not guilty to a first-degree murder charge in the shooting death of an acquaintance in the town of Brownington.

An official at Vermont Superior Court in Newport says 51-year-old Jeffrey Ray entered the plea Tuesday. He was ordered held without bail.

Troopers say they responded Monday morning to a Brownington home where they found 53-year-old Rick Vreeland dead on the ground.

Through an investigation, state police say they identified Ray as the alleged shooter and took him into custody.

Ray is being held without bail at Northern State Correctional Facility in Newport.

Troopers say the Brownington men knew each other, and had past disputes. The investigation is ongoing.

The court did not know the name of Ray’s attorney.
