WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old Grafton man died after jumping into a Worcester lake while fleeing police.

The Worcester district attorney’s office says Joseph Martin was parked in a restricted area close UMass Memorial Medical Center on Sunday when he was approached by hospital police.

They say Martin had an open container of alcohol and white powder in a plastic bag. When an officer asked him to get out of the car, he ran to Lake Quinsigamond. They say he held up two rocks and threatened to hit pursuing officers before swimming into deep water.

He was pulled dead from the lake Sunday night by Worcester Fire Department’s dive team. The cause of death is an apparent drowning.

State police detectives assigned to the district attorney’s office are investigating.
