FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition after emergency responders pulled her from Millerton Lake about 20 miles north of Fresno.

The Fresno Bee reports (https://bit.ly/1HItcAO) State Park Peace Officer Mark De Leon says the unidentified teen wasn’t wearing a life jacket when she went underwater near an unguarded swim area as she tried to help her younger brother, who was struggling in the lake.

He made it to shore, authorities were notified and De Leon says witnesses helped rescue workers pinpoint the girl’s location in the water.

De Leon says lifeguards, Cal Fire, state park officials and a four-person dive team found the teen unconscious and started CPR within two minutes of getting the emergency call.

The girl is in in the intensive care unit at Valley Children’s Hospital.
