NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is announcing the expansion of an experimental teaching program.

It’s called “Progressive Redesign Opportunity Schools for Excellence” - or PROSE.

The program consists of a small group of schools that can work outside certain city and union classroom regulations.

That’s meant to encourage innovation to produce strategies that can help students citywide.

The announcement is being made Tuesday at a Staten Island school.

De Blasio says there will be 64 new PROSE schools next fall.

There are currently 62 PROSE schools in New York City. There have not been any on Staten Island until now.

City officials want to eventually have 200 schools in the program.

The expansion was first reported by the Staten Island Advance.
