OXNARD, Calif. (AP) - A 22-year-old Oxnard resident was saved after a motorcyclist passed and saw a man struggling in the surf.

The Ventura County Star reports (https://bit.ly/1IWYZAZ ) that 55-year-old Boyd Tarwater stripped off his motorcycle gear, swam out and brought the man to shore around 3 p.m. Monday near Mandalay Beach.

Oxnard Fire Department Battalion Chief Darwin Base says the younger man likely would have drowned. He was treated by responders was at shore.

Fire officials say the man was taken to St. John’s Regional Medical Center in Oxnard and is in stable condition.

Tarwater was on his way to a picnic on his 1990 Harley Davidson bike. He lives in Atascadero and attends Cuesta College.
