HARRODSBURG, Ky. (AP) - Authorities in Mercer County are searching for a man witnesses say went missing from a jet ski in the Kentucky River.

Multiple news outlets report Mike McCarty was riding as a passenger on the back of a jet ski Sunday evening. The jet ski’s driver, Doug Hampton, told firefighters he initially didn’t realize McCarty had fallen off the back of the craft.

Rescue crews brought in sonar equipment and divers to try to locate McCarty. Authorities say crews also used a cadaver dog in the search.

Rescuers say they had to shut down parts of the river to water traffic Sunday night to assist divers.

Family members described McCarty as a strong swimmer who was very familiar with the Kentucky River.
