MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut State Police report a slight increase in the number of traffic violations spotted by troopers over the Memorial Day weekend.

The department says it issued 1,254 speeding tickets for speeding, 1454 alleging seatbelt violations and 549 others citing offenses such as texting or using a cell phone while driving.

Officers also made 57 drunk-driving arrests.

Last year, state police handed out 1,248 speeding tickets, 954 seatbelt citations and made 54 drunk driving arrests.

State police say they investigated 285 accidents over the weekend, including two with fatalities. Another 49 crashes involved injuries.
