PHOENIX (AP) - State Sen. Catherine Miranda says she’ll explore a run for the 1st Congressional District seat Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick will vacate next year.

The Democrat’s announcement Tuesday came just hours after Kirkpatrick said she’ll challenge Republican Sen. John McCain in 2016 instead of seeking re-election.

The 50-year-old state senator’s listed address is in south Phoenix, outside the 1st District’s boundaries. The district runs from Flagstaff to Tucson’s northern suburbs and includes the Navajo Nation.

Miranda said in a statement that she believes Kirkpatrick can win and that she can help. She said she has strong cross-over appeal with voters.

Kirkpatrick is walking away from her district as the U.S. Supreme Court considers a challenge to Arizona’s redistricting commission. If the court rules against the commission the Legislature will redraw district lines.
