TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Authorities say a 23-year-old man was killed when a sweeper truck he was driving struck a retaining wall on a Tempe freeway and overturned, landing on an adjacent off-ramp.

The state Department of Public Safety identified the man killed early Tuesday morning accident on the Loop 101 freeway in Tempe as Ernest Tre Daurham of Surprise.

Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman Tom Hermann said the sweeper truck did not belong to ADOT or an ADOT contractor.

DPS spokesman Bart Graves said the truck was traveling at high speed when the driver lost control and it struck the retaining wall. The vehicle landed on the University Avenue off-ramp.

Several northbound lanes of the freeway were closed for about five hours after the accident.
