ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. (AP) - Motorists can expect travel delays on part of the highway around Lake Tahoe through Wednesday at Cave Rock on the lake’s east shore.

Nevada Department of Transportation officials closed the westbound travel lanes of U.S. Highway 50 at the Cave Rock tunnel at 9 a.m. Tuesday to further evaluate safety conditions after a series of small rock slides.

Officials say delays will last up to 30 minutes as traffic is alternated through the eastbound tunnel between Zephyr Cove and Glenbrook.

Major rains first loosened the rocks above the tunnel in early February, forcing a temporary closure of the road until several boulders could be removed from the roadway.

Experts are working this week to remove additional rock debris, investigate current conditions and develop strategies to improve future slope stability.
