LUCAMA, N.C. (AP) - One man has died and several students were hurt in a wreck involving a car and a school bus southwest of Wilson.

North Carolina Highway Patrol Lt. Jeff Gordon said the wreck happened around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday on U.S. 301 about a mile north of Lucama.

Gordon said in a statement that a bus assigned to Hunt High School was traveling north on the road after just picking up a student when it was hit from behind by a car driven by a 79-year-old man.

The man died at the scene. Gordon identified him as 79-year-old James Earl Cockrell of Lucama.

Gordon says there were 12 students on the bus. Five were taken to Wilson Memorial Hospital for injuries that were not considered to be life-threatening.
