GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - The body of a 16-year-old from Petal who disappeared Sunday from the western tip of West Ship Island has been recovered by charter boat captain.

Keith Davis, chief of the Marine Patrol for the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources, says in a news release that the captain discovered the body at 10 a.m. Wednesday about 1-1/2 miles from the area where Omar Gonzalez and a 17-year-old friend were searching for crabs Sunday during a trip to Ship Island.

Harrison County Deputy Coroner Brian Switzer identified the body and notified Gonzalez’s family.

Davis says the two teens, both from Petal, got caught in the currents Sunday afternoon. The 17-year-old male was found about 6 p.m. Sunday clinging to a buoy in the old Gulfport ship channel.
