MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Alabama state troopers investigated seven traffic fatalities and assisted with a drowning during the Memorial Day weekend travel period.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said in a statement that crashes between Friday evening and midnight on Monday involved a pedestrian, two motorcycles and an ATV. Authorities say the two motorcyclists who were killed were using helmets, but three people who were killed while riding in vehicles were not wearing seatbelts.

Officials say the number of deaths reported during this year’s 78-hour holiday weekend travel period is up from 2014, when three traffic fatalities were reported.

Despite the holiday travel period being over, authorities say state troopers will continue cracking down on seatbelt violations as part of a national Click It Or Ticket safety campaign.
