WILSON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities say a 16-year-old boy who went into a wooded area after crashing a vehicle in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula has turned up safe.

The Charlevoix County sheriff’s department says Jesse Bacon of East Jordan walked away from Monday afternoon’s crash in Wilson Township, saying he was heading home. The department said Tuesday morning Bacon was missing, but he eventually returned to his grandparent’s home.

He told investigators that he fell asleep at the wheel before the crash and went into the woods because he was scared. He was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment. The department says he had minor abrasions and some minor bruising.

A 16-year-old passenger was found about four hours after the crash, walking along a roadway. He was treated for minor injuries.
