CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - Traffic is flowing smoothly across the Ravenel Bridge between Charleston and Mount Pleasant, quite a change from Tuesday when an accident involving a diesel fuel tanker closed the bridge for eight hours, causing gridlock throughout the area.

Police say the accident late Tuesday morning forced closure of all lanes of the eight-lane bridge.

Traffic quickly began jamming up on Interstate 26 and on Interstate 526 which provides the only other bridge linking Mount Pleasant with areas west of the Cooper River near Charleston.

Police say the tanker collided with a sedan. There were minor injuries.

The bridge sat empty as crews pumped the fuel in the truck into another tanker and cleaned up spilled fuel. All lanes of the bridge reopened by 8 p.m.
