EAST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A zoning official for the town of East Haven has been arrested on federal charges alleging that he extorted money during a home inspection.

Forty-year-old Frank Biancur, Jr. was arrested Wednesday at his home in West Haven. He appeared in federal court in New Haven and was released on a $20,000 bond.

A person who answered the phone at his home declined to comment.

Federal prosecutors say Biancur told one victim he had to inspect an addition to their home and would make the person tear it down unless he received a $200 payment. Authorities say the victim told the FBI that Biancur had been extorting them since October 2012.

Biancur is charged with theft of honest services mail fraud and could face a maximum prison term of 20 years if convicted.
