LAS VEGAS (AP) - A Forest Service firefighter is hospitalized in critical condition after suffering burns while attending to a lightning-caused flame on Mount Charleston near Las Vegas.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday that Josh Evans is now recovering from second- and third-degree burns to his upper body in the burn unit of the University Medical Center in Las Vegas.

The seasonal firefighter with the Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service was battling a small fire when he was injured Monday in the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

Officials say a flash fire broke out while a chain saw was being refueled.

Evans was rescued from the scene in a helicopter as another crew stepped in to contain the fire.
