GENEVA ON THE LAKE, Ohio (AP) - Authorities in far northeast Ohio say a 22-year-old man who apparently drowned at a Lake Erie beach over the weekend had been drinking before he went into the water.

Police say the Medina (meh-DY’-nuh) man went into the water at Geneva On The Lake on Sunday, shortly after midnight, and got about 150 yards from shore but couldn’t get back. The Star-Beacon newspaper (https://bit.ly/1HvW90l ) reports that police say the man yelled for help, went under and was in the water for six minutes before an officer retrieved him.

He was pronounced dead at a hospital.

An Ashtabula County Coroner’s investigator says alcohol was a factor in the death, though it wasn’t clear if the man was legally drunk. Authorities were awaiting preliminary autopsy results to determine the cause of death.
