KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - The Kansas City Zoo is celebrating the birth of a baby gorilla for the first time in 40 years.

Kansas City media outlets report a baby was born to a 27-year-old Western lowland gorilla named Makari on Memorial Day.

Zoo officials say they have not yet determined the gender of the baby, whose father is a 31-year-old silverback named Radi. According to zoo officials, Makari has given birth to other offspring that live at other zoos.

Officials will announce when the baby gorilla will be on display.
