NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (AP) - A 19-year-old man from Smithfield was sentenced to serve 18 months in prison on convictions for conspiracy to commit money laundering and harboring a fugitive.

The Virginian-Pilot (https://bit.ly/1FWPJfR ) reports Danish Syed was also ordered to pay more than $35,000 in restitution and serve three years of supervised release. A news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office in the Eastern District of Virginia says Syed pleaded guilty in February on charges that were the result of his efforts in 2014 to help his half-brother, Mehdi Syed, avoid prosecution on federal bank fraud and identity theft charges.

The news release says Mehdi Syed was able to open bank accounts under several aliases and escape electronic monitoring. While on the run, he closed the accounts and sent the remaining money to Danish Syed.
