RUTLAND, Vt. (AP) - The mother of a man charged with holding his wife captive in the bedroom of their home says the woman wanted to be locked in by her husband.

Susan Payson said at a hearing to determine Michael Jokinen’s right to bail in Rutland criminal court that the woman was always free to go. She says the wife wanted to be locked in the room so her husband would trust her.

Prosecutors want the 34-year-old held without bail on kidnapping charges. They say he held his wife captive in their home for over four years by padlocking her into a bedroom and boarding the windows shut.

Jokinen pleaded not guilty May 18 to kidnapping and unlawful restraint.

Police say the victim escaped by jumping from a second-story window.
