ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - A Memorial Day weekend crackdown by New York State Police targeting impaired drivers netted 187 arrests for driving while intoxicated.

Several sobriety checkpoints were conducted across the state, and state police say more than 5,500 vehicles passed through them.

Overall, 12,082 tickets were issued during the initiative from last Friday through the Monday holiday. The breakdown also includes 3,597 tickets for speeding, 2,932 for child restraint or seatbelt violations, 381 for distracted driving, and 125 for move-over law violations.

State police also investigated 726 accidents that injured 192 people and killed seven. Last year, the accident total was 690.
