MACEDONIA, Ohio (AP) - A northeast Ohio school board president has resigned amid criticism that he wrote a letter in support of a former board president sentenced to prison for having child pornography.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group (https://bit.ly/1cgw1hc ) reports that Nordonia Hills School Board President Jim Virost resigned Tuesday after a petition and Facebook page were started last week pressuring him to quit.

Virost had been chosen to replace Steven Bittel, who resigned in September. Virost was one of 27 people who filed letters of support with the court for the 53-year-old Bittel, who was sentenced in April to 14 years in prison on child-pornography charges.

Virost acknowledged it was a mistake to write the letter, but made it clear he wasn’t defending Bittel. He said he was pressured by “cyber bullies.”
