RIVERTON, Wyo. (AP) - Riverton parents are volunteering as crossing guards after a traffic incident killed a 7-year-old girl.

The Ranger of Riverton reports (https://bit.ly/1IZW22M ) that Sophia Archer died Friday when a 77-year-old woman driving a pickup truck struck the child as she was crossing the street. No arrests or citations have been issued in the case and police are still investigating.

Parents are serving as crossing guards near the site of the crash, calling the area “Sophie’s crosswalk.”

Fremont County School District 25 superintendent Terry Snyder said crossing guards are in place around all of Riverton’s elementary schools. It is difficult to maintain a full staff of crossing guards due to the irregular hours, though, and crossing guards are not stationed at intersections throughout town.
