POWELL, Wyo. (AP) - Powell’s police chief is calling for the city council to ban electronic cigarettes for children under the age of 18.

The Powell Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1RmyYN3 ) that Wyoming law prohibits juveniles from using e-cigarettes that contain nicotine, but Police Chief Roy Eckerdt says it’s nearly impossible for law enforcement to tell what someone’s smoking in the device.

Park County School District No. 1 already prohibits its students from having or using electronic cigarettes at any school facility or function and Eckerdt says Powell’s retailers have a policy of not selling the device to minors.

Eckerdt says the ordinance would largely be a preventative measure. However, he says there was an instance this month where a middle school-aged youth had an electronic cigarette off of school property and police could do nothing about it.
