MACKINAC ISLAND, Mich. (AP) - Strengthening defenses against Asian carp, dredging harbors and protecting Michigan military bases are among the 2015 priorities for the state’s congressional delegation.

Democratic Sen. Debbie Stabenow and Republican Rep. Fred Upton announced an “action plan” Wednesday at the Detroit Regional Chamber’s Mackinac Policy Conference.

Stabenow says the 16-member delegation - which has five new members - continues to push legislation focusing efforts on a river 40 miles from Chicago to prevent carp from invading the Great Lakes. They also want to keep the A10 aircraft and its future replacement at the Selfridge Air National Guard Base in suburban Detroit.

Upton says he’s hopeful legislation to ban microbeads in personal care products reaches President Barack Obama within months.

The tiny plastic bits are showing up inside fish caught for human consumption.
