MIDDLETOWN, N.J. (AP) - A man holding his 13-month-old son hostage was shot and killed by a member of the Monmouth County SWAT team after a standoff early Wednesday morning in Middletown, officials said.

The mother of the child called police late Tuesday night to say that Scott McAllister, 39, was intoxicated, had beaten her and was threatening to harm their child with a wife, the state attorney general’s office said.

McAllister was locked inside the home with the boy and refused to allow police to enter they said. After a negotiator tried unsuccessfully through the night for about five hours to get McAllister to surrender and release the toddler, the SWAT team forced its way in at 4:30 a.m. and a member fatally shot McAllister.

His son, who was near him, was not harmed.

The state Attorney General’s Shooting Response Team is investigating what happened early Wednesday in the rented home in Middletown.

Neighbor Carmine Ruocco told the Asbury Park Press that he heard two gunshots early Wednesday morning.

Pete Costa, who lives in the home behind the crime scene, told the newspaper that the news came as a shock.

“It’s a quiet neighborhood,” he said. “It’s a shore community. Nothing like this ever happened.”
