CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Students who wish to pursue degrees in jazz, theater and a variety of other fields soon will no longer be able to do so at some of North Carolina’s public universities.

The University of North Carolina system will discontinue 46 academic degree programs and consolidate 10 others as decided in a final vote by the UNC Board of Governors last week.

Among the degree programs disappearing are the theater and jazz programs at North Carolina Central University, and Africana studies and women’s and gender studies at North Carolina State University.

Also eliminated at various campuses were French and German, as well as education degrees including mathematics education, special education and art education.

A statement released Tuesday by the UNC system’s General Administration explained the process of degree discontinuation. The system periodically reviews programs that have awarded fewer than 20 degrees in the past two years at the undergraduate level or fewer than 11 degrees in the most recent year. This year, the system reviewed 221 degree programs across the state.

The News & Observer reports (https://bit.ly/1LJzmSs) similar discontinuations have occurred every two years since 1995.

Robert Trowers, who teaches brass and jazz at North Carolina Central University, said some are sad that the jazz degree is being eliminated. The administration had previously identified it as one of several areas of distinction for the university.

“I guess some people are (unhappy) - the folks who are really looking for that specific jazz training,” Trowers said.

At the school, jazz will become a concentration within the music major. Trowers said he knew of no plans to downsize the jazz faculty.
