ROANOKE, Va. (AP) - Virginia State Police have identified a man who was shot and wounded by troopers following a high-speed chase on Interstate 81.

State police spokesman Sgt. Richard C. Garletts says 25-year-old Justin Howard St. Clair of Fincastle remains hospitalized in stable condition.

The shooting occurred on southbound I-81 in Botetourt County on Monday afternoon. Garletts says in a news release that troopers tried to pull over a vehicle for speeding and it didn’t stop.

The vehicle ran off the interstate and wrecked following a 21-mile chase. Garletts says St. Clair got out of the vehicle with a gun. He was shot after he refused to comply with troopers’ demands to drop the weapon.

The state police’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation field office in Salem is investigating the incident.
